A mere sampling...

(Genesis:3:12-13) "The woman ... gave me of the tree.... The serpent beguiled me." Adam blames Eve and Eve blames the serpent. Cherchez la femme in antiquity.

(Genesis:4:1) "And Adam knew his wife; and she conceived." This is the first sexual intercourse mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. Which produced a baby boy of course.

(Genesis:4:3-5) "And the Lord had respect unto Abel and to his offering." YHWH likes Abel's dead animals better than Cain's fruits and vegetables. Why? Well, no reason is given, but it probably has something to do with the amount of pain, blood, and gore involved. Does YHWH desire animal sacrifices? Does YHWH respect anyone? Why create animosity? Lead us not into temptation!

(Genesis:4:17) "And Cain knew his wife." That's nice, but where did she come from? The first of the many biblical anonymous women

(Genesis:4:18) "And unto Enoch was born Irad: and Irad begat Mehujael: and Mehujael begat Methusael: and Methusael begat Lamech." How? By more anonymous women or parthenogenesis?

(Genesis:4:19) "And Lamech took him two wives." Lamech is the first of a long line of biblical men with more than one wife. Is polygamy OK? Of course, they bear children.

(Genesis:4:22) "... and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah." Naamah is the fourth named woman in the Hebrew Bible. Strangely, she is a sister not a daughter.

(Genesis:4:23-24) Lamech kills a man. Where did this anonymous guy come from and why was he murdered?

(Genesis:4:25) "And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son" Of course she bare. Testosterone on steroids for all the biblical men.

(Genesis:4:26) "And to Seth ... was born a son." Where did he find his wife? Another biblical anonymous woman and another male child.

(Genesis:5:4) "And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:" Finally, sometime in the next 800 years, Adam begat some daughters. These anonymous women are the first girls to be born in the Hebrew Bible. After this, a few other biblical male named characters start having sons and daughters but where did all the other anonymous women, Adah and Zillah come from then?

(Genesis:5:32) "And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth." Three sons in one year? Triplets by one anonymous wife or by two or three anonymous wives?
Genesis:10:28) "And Obal, and Abimael, and Sheba,"
(Genesis:10:29) And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab: all these were the sons of Joktan."
A boy named Sheba, why didn't "A Boy Named Sue" Johnny Cash think about it?
(Genesis:11:4 "And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth."
(Genesis:11:5) "And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of men builded."
(Genesis:11:6) "And the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do."
(Genesis:11:7) "Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech."
Is YHWH talking to himself or to other gods as well? Why YHWH has to go down? Couldn't YHWH see it from where he was sitting? Doesn't YHWH know everything? YHWH worries that the people will succeed in building a tower high enough to reach him (them?) in heaven, and that by so doing they will become omnipotent or is it penis envy because the Tower of Babel would be the largest phallic symbol?

(Genesis:11:9) "Therefore is the name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of all the earth: and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face of all the earth." As for the confounding of languages, see Genesis10:20, Genesis10:31 and Genesis11:1. Given the many biblical absurdities, contradictions, inconsistencies and dubious spellings was the writing of the Hebrew Bible outsourced?

(Genesis:12:11) "And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon:
(Genesis:12:12) Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.
(Genesis:12:13) Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee."

(Genesis:13:14) "And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:"
(Genesis:13:15) For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever."
Unless the Earth is flat, Abram is standing on a tall mountain or he gets to be Elasticman, YHWH gave him no more than a very small plot of land...

(Genesis:17:10) "This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised."
(Genesis:17:12) And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed."
Does YHWH like pain, suffering and blood? An eight day old infant before anesthetics feels no pain? And why before the age of consent?

(Genesis:26:4) "And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven." Mercifully this never happened or one earth would not suffice.

(Genesis:26:7-11) "And the men of the place asked him of his wife; and he said, She is my sister: for he feared to say, She is my wife; lest, said he, the men of the place should kill me for Rebekah; because she was fair to look upon." Here we go again, echoes Genesis:12:11-20 of Abraham's selfsame conduct by Isaac: pimping and lying. Does YHWH approve of lying, pimping and prostitution?

(Genesis:30) Jacob, Leah, Rachel, Bilhah and Zilpah. Sex and more sex. Promiscuity, polygamy, adultery and children always children (usually male) on every "go into (a vagina)".

(Genesis:34:1) And Dinah the daughter of Leah... Jewish tolerance and brotherly love.

(Genesis:35:22) "And it came to pass, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine: and Israel heard it." May and December sex?

(Genesis:37:3) "Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children" Why does YHWH always create animosity between siblings? See also Genesis:4:3-5.

(Genesis:38:9-10) "And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also." Sex all in the family again, why do we have to know unless the Hebrew Bible is teaching coitus interruptus?

(Genesis:39:7) "And it came to pass after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph; and she said, Lie with me" Potiphar's wife, another biblical "bad" anonymous woman.

(Genesis:39:12) "And she caught him by his garment, saying, Lie with me: and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and got him out." Illicit sex again. Echoes of Phaedra, the wife of Theseus and her stepson Hippolytus.

(Exodus:17:16) "For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation." A god on a perpetual warpath?

(Exodus:19:21) "And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish." This is really a comic moment. Israel’s children cannot look at their god without being incinerated! An all-powerful god that does not know how to be less toxic! Were Moses, Abraham and all the others that gazed upon YHWH wearing 3-D glasses then?

Exodus:20:1: "And God spake all these words, saying,"
Exodus:20:2: "I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage."
Exodus:20:3: "Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
Exodus:20:4: "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:"
Exodus:20:5: "Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;"
Exodus:20:6: "And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments."
Exodus:20:7: "Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain."
Exodus:20:8: "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy."
Exodus:20:9: "Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:"
Exodus:20:10: "But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:"
Exodus:20:11: "For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it."
Exodus:20:12: "Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee."
Exodus:20:13: "Thou shalt not kill."
Exodus:20:14: "Thou shalt not commit adultery."
Exodus:20:15: "Thou shalt not steal."
Exodus:20:16: "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour."

Exodus:20:17: "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's."

Those commandments are nice but how many of them were broken in the Hebrew Bible?

Thou shalt not kill unless YHWH instructs you to or you are the shepherd David then you can kill 200 Philistines for their foreskins (1Samuel:18:27). (Are foreskins YHWH's obsession?)

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife unless you are the shepherd David then you can lust after Bathsheba (2Samuel:11:2).

Thou shalt not commit adultery unless you are Solomon with 700 wives and 300 concubines then you can fornicate with the visiting Queen of Sheba (1Kings:10:13).

Thou shalt not steal unless YHWH instructs you to and you are the Israelites stealing Canaan after an ethnic cleansing.

Etcetera. No list is complete without it.

On Faith:

If I lived in Egypt in 1500 BCE, I would have had an absolute and unquestionable belief in Amun-Re.
If I lived in Persia in 1400 BCE, I would have had an absolute and unquestionable belief in Zoroaster.
If I lived in Babylon in 597 BCE, I would have had an absolute and unquestionable belief in Marduk (but I would have liked Ishtar better!).
If I lived in Greece in 435 BCE, I would have had an absolute and unquestionable belief in Zeus (but I would have liked Aphrodite or Pallas Athena better!).
If I lived in Scandinavia in 700 CE, I would have had an absolute and unquestionable belief in Odin (but I would have liked Thor better!).

Living in the USA of today, should I have an absolute and unquestionable belief in YHWH the God of the Hebrew Bible?
So much for the faith and tradition of our Forefathers. A faith that started around 100 CE for Westerners. Legitimacy came around 313 CE with Constantine’s Edict of Milan. Split up into Roman Catholic and heretical Protestant many sects with the advent of the printing press (1400’s) and is almost ignored in Europe now. Leaving the United States as the true believers on par with the fanatical Muslims.

The funny thing about the heretical Protestant Reformation is that once the unity of Christendom was cleaved, it can go on splitting ad nauseam depending on which verses of the Hebrew Bible one fancied the most.

Whereas Christendom had only one god and only one truth thanks to the heretical Protestant movement and their Hebrew Bible for the masses it would still kind of have one god but conjoined in a required trinity due to the central role given to the son, Jesus and many truths depending on how Hebrew Bible verses are interpreted. So much for an unequivocal divine revelation! Oh, the tangled web of sheer nonsense have the heretical Protestants weaved for themselves...

72% of Americans believe in creation and in 1905 it is said only 5 people understood relativity. What does that tell you about the quality and knowledge of the masses?

It should be noted that I do not vilipend or vituperate "faith" or people of faith. On the contrary, I admire them. What I object to is where this faith is placed.

Faith in a Flat Earth Holy Book?

No matter how one slices it a Flat Earth conception permeates the Hebrew Bible.

Joshua:10:13 "And the sun stood still, and the moon stayed, until the people had avenged themselves upon their enemies. Is not this written in the book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and hasted not to go down about a whole day."

Joshua:10:14 "And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Israel."

The Hebrew Bible fabulists were not even aware that Erathostenes, a Greek, had already figured out in 255 BCE that the Earth was a sphere and had measured its circumference.

If that is not enough to disqualify the Hebrew Bible as a god revealed holy book, the period picked for YHWH creation is a late Iron Age. Bypassing in a single bound the Stone Age and the Bronze Age. Ages that are well documented archaeologically.

Genesis:3:24 "So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life."
Genesis:4:22 "And Zillah, she also bare Tubal-cain, an instructer of every artificer in brass and iron: and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah."

Come on now an omniscient god should reveal a more realistic book than that.

How to locate the Garden of Eden

Genesis 3:24: "So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life."

Never mind the oxymoron of iron and a flaming sword just after the creation of the universe by YHWH! One should wonder what the Australian aborigines were doing with stone tools up to the present? Maybe they did not benefit from YHWH’s advanced late Iron Age creation and civilization? And if YHWH is so advanced to leapfrog in a single bound the Stone Age and the Bronze Age why not have angels armed with MK 48 machine guns? Better yet land-mine the place or have Americans (especially if Evangelicals) flying AWACs (Airborne Warning and Control) as a prelude to aerial carpet-bombardments.

To find where the Garden of Eden is then all one has to do is to look for a group of Cherubim (Cherubs? Cherubim is already a Hebrew plural form) and a flaming sword which turns every way. YHWH has never removed those guardians of the Tree of Life that stood in the middle of the Garden of Eden as far as the Hebrew Bible is concerned.

An open letter to all the Hebrew Bible devotees

Unless you are of Jewish decent, why believe in a purportedly holy book the sole scope of which is to glorify an oriental tribe?

In the days the Hebrew Bible was composed, gods were the emblem and how ethnic groups identified themselves. If a group was victorious it meant their god was bigger than the god of the vanquished. Ergo all the wishful thinking sable-rattling of the Hebrew Bible against Egyptians, Amalekites, Canaanites, Philistines, etc...
Do you think our ancestors, whether Greeks, Romans, Phoenicians, Hittites, Lydians, Egyptians, Mesopotamians, Babylonians, Assyrians, Persians, Celts, Germanics, et alia were less religious and less devoted to their gods? They certainly were not godless or devoid of religious fervor.
Do you really think that our ancestors were then less moral because instead of constructing a body of rules and regulations under the guise of a divine revelation built great architectural wonders of temples and shrines to their gods for all to see? There is more piety in an ancient temple's fallen stone than in all the Hebrew Bible. The arrogance is not there.

Democracy and Western individualism? The Hebrew Bible does not have an ounce of either. Rather collectivism is present in a big way and when vox populi demanded a leader, a king was appointed by Samuel, a judge (just like the US Supreme Court did with Bush43) not by popular acclaim. And then there is this ever-interfering YHWH who dictates all.

Why wallow in a book where ethnic cleansing, guilt by association, collective punishment, pimping and cruelty to animals are legitimized and sanctioned by YHWH?
If it is prophecies Hebrew Bible devotees hanker after let them have Nostradamus's quatrains. The prophecies there are more current and accurate.
Older religions and polytheistic religions have been maligned to make room for monotheistic religions for a very long time but polytheistic religions were really henotheistic since one god whether Marduk, Zeus, Amun, Re or Amun-Re was paramount. Monotheistic religions on the other hand become polytheistic when all those angels, saints, Mother Marys, etc... are rolled in. And by the intrinsic virtue of lacking a central dogmatic authority, polytheism was a much more inclusive religion. (Compare this with the many Christian sects America has begotten thanks to this lack of a central Church on its soil. The Pilgrims came to Plymouth not because they were discriminated against in tolerant Holland where they had initially sought a refuge but because they themselves could not discriminate). Spiritual comfort is where one finds it. No creed or belief is superior to any other.

Ancient societies were seekers of stability, law and order, morality and social justice just like today's societies.

Give credit where credit is due. Egypt and Mesopotamia were first in codifying piety as the archaeological record discovered in the last two hundred years attest. Why put all the ideals of religiousness, morality and justice in a Jewish basket?

Salvation. Salvation from what?

One of the most enduring delusions of mankind involves the idea of salvation.

Salvation from what? Salvation as in escaping bodily harm only makes sense while alive. For a dead body it makes idealistic sense only if something intangible lives on after death. To date there is not a scintilla of evidence that something like a soul exists. Yet this has not stopped millions of people from embracing the most incredible beliefs in the vain hope their souls would escape eternal damnation (whatever that means). When my 23-year-old daughter to whom I was very close died after a ten month battle with cancer, she promised to give me a sign. I see her occasionally in my dreams but so far no signs after 13 years. The same promise was made by my 95 year old mother with the same result.

The main bone of contention between Roman Catholicism and the heretical Protestant Reformation, to add insult to injury, was how to obtain salvation.
The Roman Catholic Church teaches that prayers or good deeds (in the form of buying an indulgence to put money in the Church coffers) whether by the individuals themselves or by others on their behalf are sufficient to spring towards heaven a damned soul.
Heretical Protestants instead came to believe that salvation is obtained only by embracing Jesus but to do so one must know the word of god. That is the need for the credulous masses to read the Bible. An unintended consequence of this is that it now became necessary to have it commented and go to Sunday school in order to receive the correct spin. No intermediaries necessary huh? A printing industry was born! Not only is the Hebrew Bible the best-selling book of all time, it happens to be a best-seller year after year (thanks to the English speaking world especially America through its Puritanism and Evangelical crowd). A boon ever since for people with the gift of the glib and a Bible in their grasp. Repent, salvation, damnation, fire and brimstone, oh my!
Indulgences I think bring nowadays no income to the Roman Catholic Church but embracing Jesus and bible studies are building megachurches for the heretical Protestant denominations.

Which is worse, the nonsense value of an indulgence and the certainty of complete absolution received through the sacrament of confession or the psyche-scaring value of Hebrew Bible studying and possession while twisting in the wind wondering if god would forgive the sins?
Why have silly ideas like salvation and sin such a hold on some of mankind? Lions, tigers and bears have no scruples about being themselves.
On a sinister note, I find it strange that an oriental tribe that seems to have a hammerlock on divinity with their Hebrew Bible in the real world never had any temporal power. Is this then a conspiracy on their part to hamstring the powers that be?

Prohibition, Bush43 and the Religious Right

As Prohibition became increasingly unpopular during the Great Depression, especially in large cities, repeal was eagerly anticipated. On March 23, 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt signed into law an amendment to the Volstead Act known as the Cullen-Harrison Act, allowing the manufacture and sale of certain kinds of alcoholic beverages.

From the above and from the 12 year interregnum that the Republican Party enjoyed from 1994 to 2006 it appears that the Religious Right can pop up from time to time to really screw things up in the religion-crazy United States of America but their grip is short-lived and ends as soon as the damage done becomes crystal clear.

Prohibition ushered in a period of lawlessness unprecedented and its lasting legacy was the beginning of organized crime. Crime as such always existed but the unlawful activities of highly organized, disciplined associations managed with the same principles of legitimate businesses on a transnational scale got its start in the business-crazy, anything-goes-for- money United States of the 1920's with alcohol the catalyst. Once the genie is out of the bottle anyone can follow...

The 1994-2006 interregnum of the Republican Party aided and abetted by the Religious Right produced wars with no end and a general collapse of the world economies from which who knows what the outcome and the lasting legacy will be.

We should then be very vigilant for the next occasion when the Religious Right could rise once more to do its nefarious deeds.

The Making of the Shroud of Turin

The first thing that strikes me about the Shroud of Turin is that the face that appears in the negative image I think is not the face of a first century Jew but rather the stylized Medieval representation of a Caucasian Jesus of Nazareth.

Relics have been an important factor in Christianity ever since Helena Augusta the hen-pecking mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine (the one who legalized Christianity in 313 CE) went to Judaea looking for the true cross on which Jesus of Nazareth was crucified and came back with some wood and some thorns from the crown that he wore.

The Crusades in the 11th century opened up the (un)Holy Land and made pilgrimages there possible. I guess the trade in religious relics must have got a boost as well.

The Shroud of Turin first appeared in a church at Lirey, France in the 14th century. In the 15th century it became a possession of the House of Savoy and ended up finally in Turin, Italy.

How to produce on a linen cloth the image of a man who appears to have been physically traumatized in a manner consistent with crucifixion without using dyes, paint, pigment or a photographic process?

In Medieval times the life of peasants was cheap.

A counterfeiter who wanted to create the ultimate relic, the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth - the Savior of Christianity, all he had to do was to get a peasant (possibly one already condemned to death for not having paid the debt owed to him) crucify him in the same manner as described in the Gospels (by then readily available) and inflict before hand the same wounds also eloquently narrated in the New Testament (crown of thorns, flagellation, etc..).

After the execution was done, wrap the body in a linen cloth to be placed in a container where it would be totally covered with sand, salt and/or other drying materials housing all in a drying room.

After a suitable length of time, the linen cloth would be retrieved and the dead body (mercifully) buried for good.

A new but true sudarium of Jesus of Nazareth is now ready for purchase by true believers.

BTW. Why so few shrouds are around? Because acquiring peasants for crucifixion got a tad tough as time went on.

I read your book "Jewish History and Culture - Second Edition" for entertainment (I am a curious type). Do you guys really believe in all of that crap?

I was not born in the USA but as they say here in Texas I came as soon as I could.

I am an American citizen now in good standing (I think) but does being an American citizen require me to leave my common sense behind?

I know about "manifest destiny" but does it mean that I shouldn't question the 1848 War with Mexico when American 6 shooter Colts won the day against Mexican single shot muskets?

Does my American desire to democratize the world extend to the 1898 War with Spain when America became a colonial power by taking over the Philippines, Guam and Puerto Rico? Cuba we let go after a while but it is still perceived as a pain in the neck.

Am I also required to be amnesiac and forget the 1953 CIA plot in Iran, Operation Ajax, which overthrew Iranian Prime Minister Mohammed Mossadegh and put the Shah back in power? Also the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war when American Republicans (the Reagan years) were more than willing to supply Iraq's Saddam Hussein with arms and the chemicals to gas Kurds and Iranian pasdarans? Should I expect Iran to play nice with us now and help us with the horrible mess we made in Iraq?

Christians feel so superior to their heathen brethren because they eschew human sacrifices.

Pagans at least sacrificed mere mortals (and a king or two) to their gods and their goals were very practical like a good harvest!

The Christians upended the whole routine by sacrificing (a) god for Christian mankind's salvation. A rather remote goal. The soul does not need any real food while in its mortal flesh?

After that how could you possibly topple it with another sacrifice, manly or godly?

It was the sacrifice to end all sacrifices yet it is nonetheless a human sacrifice masqueraded as godly to make it more palatable?

Please let the Jews off the hook of deicide now. It was a dirty job but someone had to do it if the whole of Christianity depended on it. Why not the Jews then who had fabricated the biblical tales to start with?

As of today, Thursday September 21, 2006, I can no longer watch the CBS Evening News.

The CBS Evening News and I go back to 1967 and I have watched in succession Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather and Bob Schieffer but I cannot take getting squinted eyes following the crooked lips of Ms. Katie Couric or having my ears assaulted by her high pitched voice and mispronunciations although I have given her the benefit of the doubt and endured till now.

I think Ms. Katie Couric is the wrong choice for an evening anchor newsperson. The morning show she came from addresses another audience that may not require a dignifying presence.

In the spirit of your “freeSpeech” segment I have a couple of questions about today’s September 19, 2006 CBS Evening news.

1) Did you have Tzipi Livni the Jewish entity in occupied Palestine’s foreign minister as a guest because with her most crooked mouth she would make Katie Couric look almost normal?

2) How come no subtitles for Ms. Livni when she is quite unintelligible? I hope her Hebrew is better.

3) Did you notice that she mentioned the holocaust a couple of times? What has the holocaust got to do with the 136 million people in the Middle East who do not want the 4.5 million Jews as neighbors? I didn't know Middle Easterners were responsible for the Shoah and should pay for it with what has been a Moslem area of influence since 600 AD.

4) If Iran to please the Jewish entity in occupied Palestine should not have nuclear weapons, why didn't CBS mention that Israel has them already? Double standards for sure.

I have always wondered why no European or Asian nation intervened to make capital gains during the American Civil War of 1861-1865.

My best guesses are:

Napoleon III's France had just gotten involved in the second Italian war of Independence (1858) against the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.
It was also involved in the Cinco de Mayo Mexican caper of 1862 (poor Maximilian) and had to keep an eye on Bismarks's bellicose Prussia.

Prussia got late to the great powers table and was busy colonizing what was left of Africa and spoiling for the fight with France that came in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871.

England was watching both France and Prussia besides having just quelled the Sepoy revolt of 1857-1858 in India and getting ready to fight for South Africa: the Zulu war of 1879 and the Boer war of 1899-1902.
Besides being afraid of losing Canada that in 1867 became anyway the semi-independent Dominion of Canada.

The Austrian-Hungarian Empire having lost its Italian provinces, was busy digesting Bosnia-Herzegovina and appeasing the rebellious Magyars.

Czarist Russia was busy with expanding in Asia. Siberia and the "stans" beyond but not Afghanistan checkmated by the Brits.

Spain with no more spoils from the Americas to keep it afloat was in a deep decline and was finished off as a power by the Spanish-American war of 1898 when the USA became a colonial power by grabbing the Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico and Cuba.

In the spirit of Mel Gibson, I too would like a read-out to see if I am an anti-Semite.

It is nice for the Jews to have millennial old traditions but as an Etruscan my traditions are older (or at least as old).

Dear PC World,

Having recently being invaded by some spyware, I was very intrigued by the PC World issue of August 2006 where in bold letters on the front page I read: “10 biggest security risks you don’t know about - how to protect your PC and your privacy”.

While I am grateful for the 10 items listed, in terms of doing anything useful about them your article is pure fluff. I suppose your magazine is just an excuse for the 100+ pages of advertisements plus all the plugs to buy all sorts of additional software.

Yes, my laptop was infected with the ad-ware spyware. Yes, in my zeal to root it out I did destroy my Windows XP registry by deleting most of the entries with HKLM in it before I realized it stood also for Hardware Key Local Machine and was needed by Windows.

How did I get over my problem? Not by buying antispyware or antivirus software that would unnecessarily slow down my machine, scanning for yesterday’s bugs. I did it by having a safe, valid and complete image of my hard drive on a USB hard-drive.

Acronis, Apricorn and Norton Ghost for instance can create such mirror images of hard-drives thereby making recovery easy, fast and painless. The non-system related and more volatile data I incrementally back up regularly.

You mentioned the Trojan Winloginhook.Delf.A in your article yet you don’t tell where it would locate itself. Here on the other hand is my location list for the ad-ware malware:

The USA can give all sorts of sophisticated weapons (developed at US taxpayers expense) to the Jewish entity in occupied Palestine but Syria and/or Iran cannot supply whoever they want?
