Why is liberal a dirty word?

Excuse my French but why has liberal become a dirty word in America when the last 15 years of Republican interregnum has created nothing but deficits, chaos and bankrupt American goodwill around the world?

And if Democrats are for defeat, can someone point to Republican victories?
